Maltese firms are demonstrating exceptional confidence and ambition compared to their European counterparts, according to a new European Investment Bank (EIB) report highlighting Malta's strong business environment.

More than a third of Maltese companies (37%) expect to increase investment, a proportion nine times higher than the EU average of just 4%. This remarkable optimism underscores the robust investment outlook among Malta's business community.

Over half of Maltese firms are focused on expanding their capacity, at 52% compared to the EU average of 26%, demonstrating strong growth ambitions across the local economy. The EIB described Maltese businesses as "highly active in investing" and benefiting from "a generally favourable perception of the domestic economic and financial climate".

Malta's companies excel in international trade integration, with nearly four-fifths (79%) trading internationally versus the EU average of 66%. Manufacturers and service providers show particularly impressive global engagement, with 97% and 95% respectively participating in international trade.

Innovation represents another key strength, with 35% of Maltese companies innovating internally compared to just 21% across the EU. Digital technology adoption is robust, with around 41% of firms systematically using generative AI tools like ChatGPT for internal processes, marketing, sales and customer service.

Financial conditions for Maltese companies are improving significantly. Reported financial constraints stand at just over half the EU average, whilst borrowing costs have plummeted from 18% last year to just 3% this year - a dramatic improvement in access to capital.

Maltese firms are also leading on sustainability, with 56% investing in climate resilience and 95% implementing emission-reduction measures, demonstrating strong commitment to environmental responsibility.

Female representation in senior management is advancing, with around a third of companies now having at least 40% women in leadership positions - an increase of approximately 10 percentage points from last year.

The EIB concluded that Malta's innovation capacity "stands out as a strength" with a growing numbers of companies competing globally.
