Malta Sees Strong Business Growth With 3,744 New Company Registrations

Malta’s business landscape continued to expand last year, with the Malta Business Registry (MBR) recording 3,744 new company registrations, the majority of which were private companies, according to figures presented in the Registry’s Annual Report to Parliament.

The growth builds on a broader digital transformation drive at the MBR. Almost 300,000 documents were registered during the year, with 80% submitted and processed digitally. MBR Chief Executive Officer Dr Geraldine Spiteri Lucas said this was “thanks to substantial investment in technology” aimed at reducing bureaucracy and streamlining administrative processes for businesses.

The scale of activity reflects a registry handling an increasingly heavy workload: more than 282,000 submissions were processed last year, with around 80% of these handled digitally, easing paperwork for companies still filing manually.

This mirrors a wider trend across Malta's public and financial services sectors, where agencies are increasingly turning to digital tools and automation to speed up processing times, and improve transparency - without loosening regulatory rigour. At the MBR, that balance was evident in its compliance work alongside the digital gains: the Registry carried out screening on 150,000 individuals involved in companies in Malta during the past year, and 1,700 unannounced inspections were conducted.

Malta's growing international standing in this space was also underlined by Dr Spiteri Lucas's own role: she was selected from among representatives of 80 countries for Malta to assume the Presidency of the Corporate Registries Forum.

Together, the figures point to a jurisdiction balancing entrepreneurial momentum with tightening governance standards - a combination increasingly seen as central to Malta's appeal as a base for business, alongside its ongoing push toward a fully digital registration process.
