MFSA Brings Together Global Experts at FinTech2030 to Explore the Future of Financial Services
The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has hosted FinTech2030: Shaping the Next Era of Financial Services, bringing together regulators, policymakers, industry experts and technology specialists from Malta and abroad for a day exploring the regulatory and technological forces reshaping financial services.
Opening the conference, MFSA CEO Kenneth Farrugia said the pace of technological change is creating both opportunity and new risk in equal measure, framing FinTech2030 as a platform for regulators and industry to exchange experience and prepare collectively for what comes next.
The programme opened with a strategic overview of the regulatory landscape from Christopher P. Buttigieg, the MFSA's Chief Officer Supervision, before moving into a wide-ranging look at MiCA and the evolving crypto-assets space, covering the regulation's next phase, supervisory convergence across jurisdictions, and lessons learned from two years of implementation, alongside international perspectives on stablecoins and crypto-derivatives.
Later sessions tackled the risk landscape emerging from new technologies, with dedicated discussions on AI's implications for financial services, cybersecurity, and the post-quantum era's impact on financial system resilience. The conference closed on financial crime, examining the money laundering risks associated with crypto-assets and the importance of strong AML/CFT frameworks and cross-sector cooperation.
Closing the event, Farrugia underlined the need for sustained collaboration between regulators, policymakers and market participants as technological and regulatory change continues to reshape the sector. The day also brought an exciting announcement: the launch of Malta Finance Week, the MFSA's new flagship financial services event, with further details on its 2027 edition to follow.
