Malta has secured another prestigious international accolade, being named "Best International Tourism Destination" at the Italian Tourism Awards held in Rome on 10th December.

The award, presented at the St Regis Rome during "The Night of Excellence" ceremony, recognises Malta's outstanding tourism promotion efforts and innovative marketing strategies. The event was broadcast on Rai 2, Italy's national television network, providing significant visibility for Malta's tourism achievements.

Accepting the award, Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) Director for Italy Ester Tamasi emphasised that the recognition belonged to the entire team behind Malta's tourism strategy. "This award reflects a coherent and multidisciplinary approach that responds to the evolving needs of contemporary travellers," Tamasi said. "It creates economic value whilst preserving the soul of the destination."

The Italian Tourism Awards jury commended Malta for its excellence in tourism marketing, international development, and promotion, noting that the island's tourism strategy effectively addresses modern traveller needs whilst maintaining the destination's authentic character.

The award comes following another record-breaking year for Malta's tourism sector. In 2024, the Mediterranean archipelago welcomed 3.56 million visitors, representing a 19.5 percent increase compared to 2023. Total tourist expenditure reached €3.3 billion, up 23.1 percent year-on-year, with visitors spending an average of €924 during their stays.

MTA CEO Carlo Micallef said the Italian award reflects the strong relationship with the Italian market, which contributed 17.3 percent of Malta's total arrivals in 2024, making Italy the island's second-largest source market after the United Kingdom.

The recognition underscores Malta's success in positioning itself as a year-round premium destination, combining rich history, stunning Mediterranean landscapes and vibrant cultural experiences. Tourism continues to contribute approximately 15 percent to Malta's GDP, cementing its role as a cornerstone of the nation's economy.
