Malta's Film Industry Generates €1.5 Billion

Malta's film industry has contributed approximately €1.5 billion to the nation's economy over the past eight years, whilst supporting more than 15,000 jobs across various sectors, according to data released by the Malta Film Commission. 

Film Commissioner Johann Grech revealed that Malta has hosted 200 film and production projects during this period, matching roughly half of the total output from the previous 100 years. Local production spend reached approximately €730 million, with the industry transforming from a seasonal operation into a year-round economic driver. 

"We transformed it into an industry that works throughout the year, creating everyday opportunities for the Maltese people," Grech stated, highlighting how the sector has evolved since he assumed the role eight years ago. 

The industry's growth has been particularly striking in employment. The local crew base has expanded from around 300 professionals working intermittently to more than 1,800 Maltese crew members now working year-round. The economic benefits extend far beyond direct employment, with the industry supporting jobs across hospitality, transport, retail, and creative services. 

"Everyone benefits from the film industry, from hotels and restaurants to carpenters and farmers," Grech noted, emphasising the sector's broad economic impact throughout the archipelago. 

Malta has attracted major international productions including Ridley Scott's Gladiator sequel and Napoleon, as well as entries from the Jurassic World franchise. Looking ahead, Grech announced plans to develop a Malta Film Studios masterplan featuring the world's first Land-Sea Super Stage. The ambitious infrastructure project is designed to accommodate large-scale cinematic and episodic productions spanning both land and adjacent sea capabilities. 

"With our Malta Film Studios project...we will consolidate our dream of creating a world-class film industry in Malta," Grech said, underlining the commission's commitment to securing long-term opportunities for Maltese professionals.
