Malta International Airport Secures €100 Million To Power Landmark Terminal Expansion

Malta International Airport (MIA) has secured €100 million in external financing to fund one of its largest upgrades since privatisation, marking a major vote of confidence in the country's aviation future.

The investment will support an ambitious terminal expansion that will add 26,000 square metres of new facilities by 2028, reinforcing Malta's position within the European aviation sector. The redevelopment will deliver 32 new check-in desks, five departure gates and a dedicated crew gate, alongside enlarged circulation areas, modern baggage sorting systems and expanded commercial spaces. This will enhance the passenger experience and accommodate continued growth in travel demand.

Announcing the package at MIA's 34th annual general meeting, CEO Alan Borg confirmed the financing comprises two loans of €50 million each, repayable over five and seven years respectively. He said the funding would allow the company to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects under its multi-million-euro investment programme while maintaining strong financial stability.

Borg noted that preliminary site works are already progressing, including excavation below road level, the rerouting of key building services and the creation of safe access routes. Work on the SkyParks 2 development is also advancing steadily, with the new hotel expected to be handed over in the final quarter of 2026.

"The backing of a leading local bank reflects shared confidence in our vision for MIA and its role in the future of the tourism industry," Borg said. He added that the financing would help preserve liquidity and ensure the company can continue meeting its commitments to employees, business partners and shareholders.

The announcement builds on a period of sustained investment by the airport. MIA committed €61.6 million in capital expenditure last year, reinvesting nearly 40 per cent of its annual revenue to strengthen operations, modernise infrastructure and elevate the travel experience. This is helping to cement Malta’s role as a thriving aviation hub.
