Malta took centre stage in global maritime governance last week, hosting the first international meeting of shipping registry compliance officers focused on strengthening UN sanctions implementation across the maritime industry.

The Valletta-based Global Centre for Maritime Sanctions Monitoring (GCMSM), in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), convened compliance officers and registry authorities from 37 countries alongside UN experts, EU representatives, and maritime governance specialists for the groundbreaking gathering.

As the world's sixth-largest ship registry, Malta demonstrated its commitment to responsible maritime leadership by facilitating crucial dialogue on enhancing transparency and accountability in global shipping practices. The meeting underscored Malta's position as a trusted international maritime hub dedicated to upholding the integrity of the rules-based maritime system.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg emphasised Malta's dedication to promoting law-abiding shipping practices, ensuring the nation's flag maintains its strong reputation globally. "This week's meeting reaffirms the need for coordinated, multilateral action to address structural vulnerabilities in maritime sanctions compliance," Dr Borg stated, highlighting how cooperation strengthens the global maritime framework.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett reinforced Malta's commitment to international collaboration, noting that reputation in the maritime sector represents a shared asset requiring collective protection. "Malta remains committed to upholding the integrity of its register and to working with international partners to strengthen coordination, improve traceability, and close the gaps where evasion risks emerge," Minister Bonett said.

The high-level gathering examined best practices for registry management whilst exploring enhanced coordination mechanisms between nations. Participants focused on improving due diligence procedures, ownership transparency, and vessel monitoring to safeguard maritime integrity.

Malta's role in hosting this inaugural meeting reinforces the country's leadership in maritime affairs and commitment to multilateral cooperation. The event positions Malta as a key player in shaping future international maritime governance frameworks whilst strengthening the island's reputation as a responsible flag state.
