Xjenza Malta And ESA Open 1.75 Million Euro Space Funding Call For Local Organisations

Xjenza Malta and the European Space Agency (ESA) are preparing to host an Info Day that will open access to more than 1.75 million euros in funding for Maltese organisations through the fourth call of ESA's Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS) programme. The event positions Malta to expand its presence within one of the world's fastest-growing economic sectors and signals a clear ambition to embed space as a serious pillar of the national economy.

The PECS programme is designed to give participating countries structured access to European-level space funding, supporting projects from feasibility studies and concept validation through to applied research and technology-focused innovation. Under this fourth call, local entities will be invited to submit proposals across a wide range of activities, with the Info Day providing direct guidance from ESA experts on how to translate ideas into viable applications.

Crucially, the opportunity extends well beyond traditional aerospace and academic players. The Space Unit within Xjenza Malta has framed this latest round to draw in the wider economic infrastructure that any mature sector requires, recognising that the modern space economy is built as much on downstream applications and professional services as it is on engineering and research.

That broader framing means the call is directly relevant to fintech firms, corporate service providers, insurance companies, legal practices, banks, and technology operators. Building a credible space economy in Malta will rely on the financial, regulatory, legal, and corporate services that allow such an economy to function at scale, and the PECS framework offers a structured route into that ecosystem.

The Info Day will give attendees a clearer understanding of the call's eligibility criteria, the types of projects that can be supported, and the practical steps involved in shaping competitive proposals. Organisations interested in exploring downstream applications, data services, AI, or cross-sector innovation linked to space will find scope within the framework, even if they have not previously worked in the sector.

The initiative reinforces a wider message from Malta's space strategy: that the sector is being treated as an economic opportunity rather than a niche pursuit. With the fourth PECS call now in motion, Maltese businesses across technology, finance, advisory, and innovation have a fresh route into a sector positioned for sustained European investment over the coming years.
