The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced, on behalf of its members, a collective commitment of two billion US dollars in new investment in Malta. The announcement was made during the WTTC Global Summit in Valletta, which brought together more than 1,000 delegates, including over 200 of the world’s leading travel and tourism chief executives and government leaders.

WTTC said the commitment reflects strong confidence in the Government of Malta’s leadership, its commitment to public-private collaboration and its long-term vision for sustainable growth in the sector. The investment is expected to support the development of infrastructure, accommodation, connectivity and visitor experiences, creating new opportunities for growth and employment.

The announcement comes as WTTC’s latest Economic Impact Research highlights the scale of the sector’s contribution. Travel and tourism is forecast to contribute $4.9 billion to Malta’s economy in 2026, representing 16.9% of GDP and supporting more than one in five jobs.

The data also places Malta among Europe’s strongest tourism performers. In 2025, the country recorded the highest annual increase in travel and tourism’s GDP contribution among all European economies, growing by 16.8% compared with a European average of 2.6%. International visitor spending rose by 16.1%, the highest growth in visitor exports among EU economies and the second highest across Europe.

Manfredi Lefebvre, Chairman of WTTC, said: “This commitment reflects the confidence our Members have in the Government of Malta and the country’s extraordinary potential.” He added that the commitments demonstrate that Malta is firmly on the radar of the international travel and tourism investment community.

Gloria Guevara, President and Chief Executive Officer of WTTC, described the commitment as a powerful vote of confidence in Malta’s future as a leading destination. “Our Members are putting capital behind their belief in the country’s potential, recognising the strength of its tourism economy and the opportunities that lie ahead,” she said.

Malta is hosting WTTC’s 26th Global Summit under the theme FUTU[RE]SET, which focuses on the forces reshaping the sector and the actions needed from governments and businesses to unlock investment, strengthen competitiveness and deliver sustainable long-term growth.

With senior executives from aviation, hospitality, travel technology, tourism investment and destinations gathered in Valletta, the summit has given Malta a platform to present its investment proposition to the people shaping the sector’s future. The two billion dollar commitment signals that this proposition is resonating, and positions travel and tourism to remain a cornerstone of Malta’s economic growth in the years ahead.
