MFSA's Financial Supervisors Academy Closes Out Training Programme with a Deep Dive Into AI
The Financial Supervisors Academy (FSA), the training and academic division of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), is wrapping up its External Training Programme with a workshop dedicated to how AI is reshaping trading and operations, and what that means for governance, risk, and regulatory compliance.
Business News Malta has followed the FSA’s training programme over recent months, having previously covered the Academy’s Spotting AI System Vulnerabilities workshop, also led by Professor Maria Lucia Passador of Bocconi University. This latest session, titled “AI in Trading & Operational Systems,” picks up where that earlier workshop left off, moving from identifying AI vulnerabilities to examining how AI is actively being deployed across algorithmic trading, liquidity management, risk modelling and compliance.
Rather than treating AI purely as an operational upgrade, the workshop takes a risk-first lens, examining scenarios such as multiple institutions relying on similar AI models, market-wide dependence on a small pool of technology providers, and how AI-driven behaviour could ripple through liquidity and financial stability more broadly. Transparency and explainability in AI-supported decision-making feature as a recurring theme throughout.
A significant part of the session is dedicated to how the EU AI Act intersects with existing financial regulation, including MiFID II, DORA and CRR/CRD, helping participants understand how AI-specific obligations layer onto rules institutions and supervisors already work within. The workshop will also look at how RegTech and SupTech tools can support both compliance functions and supervisory oversight as AI adoption accelerates.
Aimed at financial services professionals, risk and compliance practitioners, legal specialists and supervisory authorities, the workshop rounds off a training programme that reflects the FSA's broader ambition: helping the sector build the governance frameworks needed to use AI safely and resiliently, rather than simply reacting to the technology as it develops.
The workshop takes place on 14th October 2026 at the MFSA, with registration open through the FSA training portal.
