Malta has reached a notable economic milestone, with GDP per capita now sitting around 10 percentage points above the EU average, according to recent Eurostat estimates - placing it among the more prosperous member states in the bloc.
Speaking in a recent interview, Prime Minister Robert Abela outlined a programme of public investment in healthcare, infrastructure, and the environment, framing the country’s improved fiscal position as the foundation for these commitments.
On healthcare, the plans include 300 additional beds at St Vincent De Paul Residence, Malta’s largest long-term care facility, to help address growing demand from an ageing population. A new emergency ward is also planned at Mater Dei Hospital, designed to ease pressure on existing facilities and reduce waiting times. The government has announced plans for a dedicated mental health hospital to be built on the Mater Dei grounds, with construction on an initial mental health facility at the same site expected to begin within weeks.
On transport, Gozo's entire public bus fleet is set to go fully electric by the end of 2026, as part of a broader green transport strategy aimed at reducing emissions and improving air quality across the islands.
The government says it has invested over six billion euros in social spending since 2022, covering healthcare, housing, and energy subsidies, alongside two rounds of income tax reductions.
