Malta International Airport Takes Off With Historic US Routes As Aviation Growth Gathers Pace

Malta International Airport is set to significantly expand its global flight connections this summer, headlined by a landmark development in transatlantic connectivity that underscores the country’s growing stature as an aviation hub.

The most significant addition to the summer schedule is Delta Air Lines, which will become the first American carrier to operate direct services from Malta International Airport, running three weekly flights connecting the country with New York JFK Airport between June and October. This represents a milestone for international tourism growth and business travel connectivity, opening a corridor between two of the world’s most important economic markets.

The expanded schedule also brings improved Northern European connectivity, with Norwegian launching a new route to Billund in Denmark and increasing frequencies to Oslo and Helsinki, while Ryanair extends its direct service to Gothenburg. Air Baltic will double its weekly flights to Tallinn, and easyJet is launching additional services to Glasgow and Newcastle, complemented by a new Jet2 route to London Gatwick.

February passenger data reflects the strength of Malta's aviation sector, with 658,328 passengers travelling through the airport during the month. Seat capacity reached 806,540, a 15.8% increase on the same period in 2025, while the seat load factor climbed to 81.6%.

This aviation growth did not happen by chance. Malta has systematically built one of Europe’s most attractive regulatory and investment environments for the aviation industry. Most recently, the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has proposed a light-touch regulatory framework for aircraft financial leasing companies, reducing the burden for lessors with over €100 million in assets and further enhancing Malta's attractiveness as an aircraft leasing hub.

With Delta's arrival this summer, that strategy is now visible from 35,000 feet.
