Malta Emerges as Major Study Abroad Hub

Malta is establishing itself as a formidable alternative to traditional study destinations, with international student enrolments at tertiary level surging by 27% in just one year, according to recent data.

The Mediterranean country has recorded the highest year-on-year increase from Indian students, followed by significant growth from Nigeria, Libya, and Egypt, as students increasingly look beyond the “big four” destinations of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

Industry experts attribute Malta's rapid ascent to several competitive advantages. The country offers high-quality English-language education with EU-recognised qualifications, combining academic excellence with Mediterranean lifestyle at considerably lower costs than traditional destinations. Tuition fees range from €2,000 to €31,000 annually for non-EU students, with living expenses averaging €500-800 monthly.

Malta's innovative post-study work visa scheme has proven particularly attractive, enabling graduates to reclaim up to 70% of their tuition fees if they secure employment within nine months of completing a full-time university course. This initiative addresses both student financial concerns and Malta's labour market needs.

Raj Kapoor, senior director of international student recruitment at GEDU, highlighted that Malta's growth reflects its emergence as a “world-class study destination”. At Global Business School Malta, which forms part of GEDU, interest has increased from South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, with 98% of 2025 graduates securing employment.

The island's strategic Mediterranean location, political stability, safe environment, and membership in both the European Union and Schengen zone provide additional appeal. Malta maintains educational partnerships with institutions across 80 countries, whilst its bilingual population and business-friendly environment create seamless integration opportunities for international students seeking both academic credentials and career advancement within Europe.
