Finance Minister Clyde Caruana unveiled a comprehensive €150 million investment fund during his 2026 budget speech, marking a significant commitment to Malta's digital future. The initiative allocates €100 million for businesses and €50 million specifically for SMEs, focusing on advanced technology adoption and digitalisation across all sectors.
Minister Caruana emphasized that Malta Enterprise grants, working in coordination with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), European funds, and other government agencies, will distribute the funding to remove manual processes, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the nation's competitive edge in the global marketplace.
Central to the initiative is substantial investment in artificial intelligence (AI), alongside other emerging technologies including the Internet of Things, cybersecurity solutions, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), blockchain, and robotics. Minister Caruana stressed that the Government must continue making Malta future-proof, creating a resilient economy capable of adapting to technological change while remaining intelligent and competitive.
The funding represents what the minister described as unprecedented investments in digitalisation, reflecting the government's strategic vision for Malta's economic evolution. To achieve these ambitious goals, Caruana argued that increased investment in technology infrastructure, capital equipment, advanced systems, software, and automation is essential, alongside developing a workforce enhanced with sophisticated digital skills.
The comprehensive approach utilizes public-private partnerships to maximize impact, leveraging both national resources and European funding mechanisms to ensure businesses of all sizes can access the support needed for digital transformation. Malta Enterprise will play a central role in administering the schemes, ensuring that funding reaches enterprises ready to invest in next-generation technologies.
This substantial commitment positions Malta at the forefront of Europe's digital economy, demonstrating the government's dedication to fostering innovation and maintaining the island nation's competitive advantage in an increasingly technology-driven global marketplace.
