KM Malta Airlines has set out a new approach to maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and aftermarket procurement, designed to support aircraft reliability, operational continuity and tighter cost control across its growing fleet.
In a recent interview with Aviation Week, Marija Macelli, head of procurement and logistics, outlined how the carrier has rebuilt its technical and supply chain framework since launching as the successor to Air Malta.
KM Malta Airlines operations are anchored by a streamlined fleet of eight Airbus A320neos, which Macelli described as a structural advantage for the business. A single-type fleet streamlines maintenance, training, inventory and reliability tracking, while strengthening contract leverage and operational margins.
All line maintenance is retained in-house, a choice that secures direct operational control and protects daily schedule integrity. The carrier also provides turnaround and transit checks for other airlines operating into Malta, deepening its engineering support in aviation and reinforcing airport operational support at its base.
As a smaller operator, the airline carefully balances ownership of rotable components with access through pooling and power-by-the-hour programmes. Most rotables are covered through a pooling agreement, while selected items are kept in stock based on operational criticality and reliability data. Macelli noted the balance is continuously reviewed against removal trends and performance metrics, supporting dispatch reliability and reducing downtime without expanding inventory
On supply chain resilience, the carrier has shifted decisively towards proactive procurement, supported by data visibility and structured supplier partnerships. Macelli said internal statistics show a clear reduction in Aircraft on Ground (AOG)-related orders, contributing to fewer technical delays and stronger service reliability.
KM Malta Airlines recently hosted the 133rd International Airlines Technical Pool (IATP) conference. Membership of the IATP gives the carrier access to the aircraft recovery equipment pool, a meaningful operational asset for any national carrier. Together, these strategies position KM Malta Airlines for continued airline development, helping to bolster Malta’s reputation as an airline hub.
