KM Malta Airlines has signed a three-year heavy maintenance agreement with Bird Aviation, securing dependable technical support for its Airbus A320neo fleet as the national carrier continues to expand its European route network. The deal, which takes effect immediately, gives Malta's flag carrier structured access to base maintenance services at Bird Aviation's facility in Larnaca, Cyprus, and reinforces a long-running collaboration between the two operators.
Under the agreement, Bird Aviation will carry out C-checks and other scheduled heavy maintenance work on KM Malta Airlines' eight Airbus A320neo aircraft. Heavy maintenance partnerships of this kind are central to commercial aviation, providing the structured fleet planning and predictable downtime management that allow carriers to maximise aircraft utilisation while meeting strict European regulatory requirements.
David Curmi, Executive Chairman of KM Malta Airlines, said dependable maintenance support was essential to the airline's stability and forward planning, highlighting the value of working with a partner that understands both technical and operational needs. The multi-year framework allows KM Malta Airlines to plan with greater confidence, knowing that core maintenance activity is secured with an established European MRO provider.
Bird Aviation Chief Executive Frederic Pralus described the renewed partnership as a reflection of trust built up between the two companies, pointing to the importance of predictability and close coordination in the current operating environment. Founded in 2016, Bird Aviation now employs more than 250 professionals and holds certifications from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and several national civil aviation authorities, with a client base that includes some of Europe's largest carriers.
KM Malta Airlines began operations in 2024 as the successor to Air Malta, taking on a modern fleet of Airbus A320neo aircraft and a route network covering destinations across Europe and the wider region. The carrier has positioned itself around safety, reliability, and customer service, and plays a central role in Malta's broader connectivity, tourism, and economic strategy.
The agreement adds another layer of long-term stability to KM Malta Airlines' technical operations, complementing earlier engine maintenance arrangements with established European providers including Lufthansa Technik, which manages overhaul of the carrier's LEAP-1A engines. As KM Malta Airlines builds out its second full year of operations, locking in heavy maintenance capacity through to the late 2020s gives the airline a clearer planning horizon and supports Malta's wider ambition to grow as a competitive European aviation hub.
