Bank of Valletta (BOV) has been named a finalist for the International Compliance Association's Financial Crime Prevention Project of the Year, a recognition that places the bank among Europe's leading institutions for compliance excellence.
The ICA Compliance Awards celebrate outstanding achievement, collaboration and innovation across compliance and financial crime prevention teams globally. Following a rigorous judging process, Bank of Valletta secured its place on the shortlist ahead of the ceremony in London on 25 June 2026.
The bank's winning entry focused on its transaction monitoring overhaul, highlighting major improvements to controls and operational effectiveness - a programme that has become a benchmark for modernisation within the sector.
Welcoming the news, BOV Chief Executive Kenneth Farrugia described the shortlisting “This recognition is a strong affirmation of the Bank’s unwavering commitment to the highest standards of compliance, integrity and responsible banking.” He noted that safeguarding the bank's reputation, alongside delivering core banking services, remained central to its long-term sustainability and to maintaining the trust of customers, shareholders, correspondent banks and international credit rating agencies.
The recognition arrives at a moment of strategic momentum for the bank. Business News Malta recently hosted an interview with Mr Farrugia in which he set out Bank of Valletta's strategic ambitions, including its continued investment in technology, regulatory excellence and customer-focused services.
Ryan Caruana, BOV Group Chief Anti-Financial Crime Officer and MLRO, said the shortlisting “recognises the Bank’s strong journey in enhancing and modernising its financial crime prevention framework”, providing important external validation of its ongoing commitment to robust controls.
ICA President Pekka Dare congratulated Bank of Valletta on being shortlisted in what he described as a highly competitive category, confirming that finalists would be welcomed to the London ceremony in June.
