Malta's burgeoning gaming sector has secured another significant win with the announcement that two international video game studios will be opening offices on the island.

Economy Minister Silvio Schembri revealed the development at the launch of the fifth edition of Playcon, Malta's premier video game development and esports expo.

Both Feenix and Hand Rock Studio, which participated in last year's event, will be establishing operations in Malta as the Mediterranean nation continues to position itself as a European gaming hub.

Feenix, a studio specialising in user-generated content, is set to officially launch at Playcon 2025. The company is already working with major international brands including Roblox and Paddington Bear, and plans to employ 30 professionals at its Malta office.

Meanwhile, Hand Rock Studio, a subsidiary of UK-based Out of the Bit group, will establish what it claims to be Malta's first dedicated game development studio. The company says it aims to combine technical innovation with artistic craftsmanship.

The announcement underscores the growing influence of Playcon, which attracted more than 25,000 visitors last year alongside 60 exhibitors. The event also generated 24 million online impressions, demonstrating its reach within the global gaming community.

This year's edition promises an enhanced focus on education, talent development and economic growth as Malta seeks to strengthen its position in the international gaming sector.

Minister Schembri described Playcon as "an important platform for Malta's growing digital economy and gaming sector" at the launch event.

"Through targeted initiatives like the renewed partnership with Unity, Unreal Engine Education Pathways and our partnership with BLAST, we are not only nurturing local talent and creating meaningful career opportunities for our youths but also positioning Malta as a premier destination for global gaming and esports leaders," he said.

Playcon 2025 will run from 8-12 October at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre.
